Mini Silver Krugerrands
So I picked these up a few months ago from a local guy who had nothing in my price range except these 3 little guys. I think I payed like $1.28 for them or something, it was such a small amount I didn't even record it as owning physical silver. Anyways for some reason the side featuring the bust of Kruger is toned on all three, while the obverse, the antelopes? are perfectly shiny.
Ive read that there is no such thing as a silver Krugerrand so I pretty much assume that these are fake, they also feel different than silver feels... Does anyone know anything about these? Why would someone go through the trouble of making a mini SILVER Krugerrand? It does say .999 fine silver but I'm not keeping my hopes up. Like I said, i payed a tiny amount of FRN's for them so give me the bad news... http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...o/DSCN0174.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...o/DSCN0176.jpg |
Re: Mini Silver Krugerrands
There was a thread here some time back about these.
It was reported that they were indeed fakes and that Ebay was not allowing them to be listed. May still be some info there. Shame - I thought they would look cool with my gold ones in the safe. |
Re: Mini Silver Krugerrands
I don't know if they're fake (ie - not made of silver) but they are definitely not made by the South African Mint Company that makes the gold Krugerrands.

Here are some I purchased at my dealer, I really like the silver K-rand almost as much as gold ones. I have these in 1/10 thur 1 oz. I read some where that the mint did not make the silver ones , and there are different ones out there. Some have smooth outer edges and some are ribbed. If any one has any laying around and want's to trade or sell out right I would be interested...Kk

They are silver rounds, not coins and not Krugerrands.Notice they don't say South Africa. They are nice and if you want a 5 oz in a case here you go:

Re: Mini Silver Krugerrands
As far as the toning goes, if they were kept in a holder with a backing of some kind (like felt), only the obverse would tone over time. A friend of mine has a two-silver dollar set (Morgan dollar, Peace dollar) that has been sitting in a felt backed holder for probably decades. The front of both coins are monster toned, very dark and deep colors, but the reverse on both coins are shiny and spotless. From the toning in the pictures I would guess that they are silver, but for a buck and a half each, I would have bought them even if I knew they weren't.

Re: Mini Silver Krugerrands
They are just commemorative coins like crap from the Franklin Mint, not Krugs.
